Reassembling the Rear Star Hub (Part 2)

Hi.

Today I popped in to Doepie to see if he has some extra washers. He then helped me to put the correct number of shims in the star hub.

Lastly he had to machine the one axle part to fit the new inner bearing sleeve.

Reassembling the Rear Star Hub

Hi.

I am busy with the reassembling of the rear star hub - here is a picture from the WL Parts Manual:

The 1st step is (after sandblasting and painting the hub) was to replace the grease fitting.

Next, I greased the big bearing and installed the bearing, with the thrust washer and the retaining clip.

Next, I placed the large cork washer in position.

I then placed the bearing cover washer over the cork washer and installed the second retaining clip.

I then installed the inner hub sleeve and flipped the star hub over to install the bearing washer and the other bearing

But I then hit a snag - I don't have Part 3982-35:  the two lock washers that fits into the star hub.

More NOS Parts Ordered

Hi

My next parts purchase is to get a NOS wiring harness for the H-D.  But these are fairly expensive - especially if you are purchasing the parts in ZAR's.

But I have managed to find a bunch of NOS wiring parts on eBay for a 1941 H-D.  Here are some photo's:

My Restoration Approach

Hi

I might have said this in one of the posts, but just to be clear I am going to repeat myself.

The restoration approach that I have decided upon is to get the 1941 H-D WL that was provided to the SA Union Defense Force in 1941 (about 6 months before the USA became involved in WW2) is as follows:
  • I want to get the motorcycle to the original factory condition as close as I possibly can;
  • To accomplish this, I will restore the original parts;
  • Non-original parts I will replace with New Old Stock (NOS) parts, where such parts are available;
  • Else I will use high quality reproduction parts - such as that manufactured by Colony;
  • The SAUDF H-D's were painted desert khaki, as they were used in the desert war in North Africa;
  • They were also equiped with British military kit (meaning that they were not kitted out with leather saddle bags, but rather with British khaki canvas bags.
